Wat Phu
Wat Phu or in Lao Vat Phou is a temple we long planned to visit. It is located in the Lao province of Champasak and is one of the best Khmer temples we have visited, ranking on the top along with Khao Phra Viharn and Prasat Phanom Rung. Wat Phu's site stretches 1400 meters up a hill and takes full advantage of the topography. A long and steep walk up the ancient staircase leads to the main shrine on top of the hill. Beautiful lintels and other stone carvings are located up here along with a stone carving of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Inside the main shrine are several old Buddha statues. Wat Phu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and while money started flowing getting here is a bit of an adventure. There is no real streets and crossing the river on floats presents a real picture of rural Laos.
